12 Identical Balls

You have 12 identical balls. One of them is slightly different in weight than the rest. You have three weighs of a balance scale to determine which balls is different and whether it is heavier or lighter.

Hint: This is not easy…try hard to figure this out before looking at the answer…

Wow this commenting system is a mess. I am not a fan of single character formatting symbols.

Umm. can I delete a comment or mark it as spoiler after posting?

@walkingagh there is more than 1 solution (to one of the subproblems at least). Also, I will try to post a more clear explanation in a spoiler comment.

@ vectoru this is definitely not an easy puzzle. It is a very old puzzle and there is only 1 way to solve it. if you miss the heavier or lighter part, then it is almost trivial. But you have to get the heavier and lighter part.

yes you are wrong, how the hell is water gonna help?

shasheisme 10 months ago

You could also use water to measure the different weights… or am I wrong???

vectoru 10 months ago

Identical looking is the point. Even so, it’s definitely not that hard, and the answer isn’t even the easiest way.

dybo about 1 year ago

Wait, what? They’re different weights, therefore NOT IDENTICAL.
