Yes while 4 might have a ‘hole’ it’s not deemed a cylindrical hole for the puzzle. It might make it harder if 4 counted, however the pattern still remains true regardless.

Actually, 4 is consistently 0 in the examples shown.

Surely ‘4’ has 0 or 1 holes, depending on how you write it? And in the examples shown ‘4’ has 1 hole, so ‘4444’ = 4 rather than 0.

How was this difficult?
Write down 0 – 9
1111=0, any time you see 1 think 0
7111=0, all 7’s are = to 0
2172=0, all 2’s are = to 0
3213=0, all 3’s are = to 0
Just keep substituting the numbers you know equal 0 into a string that has only 1 number you don’t know, thus telling you what that number is, continue only until you know the values of the numbers that are in question.
